Citrus Surround

Nothing will wake you up in the morning quite like this citrus-inspired breakfast nook. The shade is especially vibrant and playful when paired with modern, white chairs and silver accents. Designer Celia Berliner coordinated oak flooring to serve as a warm complement to the bright walls.

Designer's Notes

This modern condo is a pied-a-terre where the client stays when coming into the city to enjoy the Portland art scene. The large accent wall, a vibrant orange, reflects the client's favorite color. The painting above the sofa is an original by the designer. Photo by Seth Lolich Gardner.

 Designer's Notes
We warm up this formal living and dining room with punchy paint colors, bold patterns and an eclectic collection of accessories. Bold striped drapes tie the living room back into the pumpkin orange dining room. The other patterns used are neutral tones and at smaller scales so as not to compete but rather enhance the others. For example, the dark taupe and cream Greek key rug is similarly geometric but medium in scale and the whimsical small feather pattern on the sofa has a striped background. Reflective metal and glass accessories placed throughout help lighten the dark wood and rich colors in the adjacent rooms. Customized furniture is carefully sized to an appropriate scale in this high-ceilinged living room and adjacent cozier dining room.

What's Been Said

Lim knows how fashionable women want to dress.

  • Lim is a contemporary pathfinder. He seems to have Marc Jacobs's understanding of what's fashionable now, this moment, and also a strong feeling for basics like proportion.

dgley Mischka Spring/ Summer 2012 Collection

Badgley Mischka Spring/ Summer 2012 collection pulverizes the audience with the fact every woman can find something interesting to her taste and for every occasion in it. There are casual outfits like teeny-tiny hotpants and jumpsuits, pieces for having fun beside the pool or at the seaside – sexy swimsuits, a rock-chic addition of a cropped leather jacket, and plenty of stylish cocktail dresses and luxurious evening gowns.

Describing their Spring/ Summer 2012 collection Mark Badgley and James Mischka explained that they wanted to make clothing that was structural in shapes and bright in colors. They definitely succeeded in both. Pieces in the collection are not airy or flowing in silhouettes. They have certain shapes, often with elements of corset style that holds the woman’s figure tightly. And the hues are totally amazing: vivid lemon, tangerine, magenta, aquamarine, gold and a variety of more reserved but no less attractive tones.

What the designers also succeeded in was the femininity of designs. Beautiful dresses came with bows, embroidery and beading, adorned with sequins and other cute details we, ladies, like so much. Frills and pleats added delicateness to the collection.

12 mistakes men make when dressing

en like looking good and like looking fashionable too and men fashion is very interesting.
But in the rush for trends they can absolutely forget about things men should never do.
Guys, remember, even one only fashion mistake can ruin your entire look! Here are the most common fashion mistakes men make when dressing.
1. Too many colors
You can attract lots of attention wearing a multicolored outfit but this is hardly the attention you are looking for. Restrict the number of colors in your clothes up to three hues and try to choose simple garments. Contrast colors look great together (for example, blue and orange) but do not use too much of them.
As for the tints which are close in the palette (red, pink), they are rarely combinable effectively.

2. Too many patterns
The most radical choice should be limited to three patterns. But to look really good and appropriate opt for one printed garment and a few solid ones.
3. Too many fabrics
Each fabric belongs to a special ‘type’. So, silk is more official than denim and flax is more democratic material. Leather looks more masculine than tweed.
That is why it is significant to combine fabrics basing not only on their texture and color, but also on the ‘type’.
Besides, one should differentiate between summer and winter wardrobe. It might seem strange but men often wear clothes made of heavy thick material in warm weather.

4. Stains
Before putting the garment into the washing machine one should make sure there are no stains on it. If there are ones they might not wash off. Nothing can be more horrible than a perfectly washed suit with stains.
5. Unseasonable clothing
I know it sounds funny but sometimes one can put on a summer garment during winter or vice versa. To avoid that, separate your clothes seasonally and hang them in different closets.
6. Too long/short pants
Try on pants and jeans before you buy them. If the length is wrong even the trendiest pair will look bad.
Remember that khaki pants and suit pants should not go lower than the upper part of your heel.
Jeans can be a bit longer and cover the heel, but avoid choosing a too long model. Shorter pants will create the illusion of shorter legs.
Ensure that your socks aren’t seen when you walk. And just an inch or two of your socks can be seen when you sit down.
7. Too high waist
If nature granted you with a short torso and long legs you need to wear low-waisted pants with front pockets. However, this model will look perfectly on those men who have an ideal tummy.
8. Length of T-shirt
If a T-shirt is too long one will never be able to tuck it in trousers neatly.
Any top should end right at the middle of the fly. If it is shorter than that, your back will expose each time you bend forward.
Try to find a brand that suits you best. This can take long time but the result will be great.
9. Too heavy top
Bright colors, catchy patterns, provocative words and famous logotypes are great but only in certain situations.
In most cases monotone T-shirts will look much more appropriate.
10. Crumpled clothes
One should be always neat and well dressed. This is impossible to achieve if the man doesn’t iron his clothes.
In no way I want to say that men don’t iron their outfits. It’s just that sometimes men don’t pay attention to details. For instance, crumpled fabric between buttons looks terrible.
If you travel much there is always a problem that clothes can get crumpled after a few journeys.
If that happens, wet the crumpled spot and smooth it with your fingers, then dry it off with fan if you have it.
11. Poorly knotted tie
As practice shows the art of knotting a tie is hard but feasible if you train a few times.
And don’t forget that a classic tie should go down to the man’s belt, no shorter or longer.

12. Socks plus sandals
Never ever do that! If you buy sandals forget about socks!
Well, I think this advice will help you look better and more attractive.

Julia Roberts Covers Vanity Fair April 2012 Issue

Julia Roberts rarely covers fashion magazines but when she does you can hardly pass the glossy without examining every single image the star appears on. On the cover of Vanity Fair April 2012 issue Mrs Roberts looks natural and beautiful. Her face is sincere and kind, and the interview is interesting to read.

Julia Roberts, who poses in demure but chic dresses for Vanity Fair April 2012 issue, opens up about her three children, dealing with fame, taking advice from Maryl Streep’s daughter and modern film industry which doesn’t allow young actors to make gradual steps in their career.

Read the highlights from Julia Roberts’ interview for Vanity Fair April 2012 issue:
Julia Roberts on problems young stars have to face in the career: “The business is so different; you can never be that new girl that has that moment of ‘Where’d she come from?’ There’s the express elevator and there’s rehab. It’s so awful; nobody gets a fair trial-and-error period that everybody deserves and everybody needs.”

Julia Roberts on how her children deal with her fame: “On a crowded street, and somebody noticed me, and then another person noticed. Somebody said as we were walking past, ‘Oh, that’s Julia Roberts.’ We all just kind of kept going, and then Finn said, ‘Yeah, my mom’s Julia Robinson.’ That’s what gives you perspective. It could be Robinson, it could be Johnson, because it has nothing to do with me as a person.”

Julia Roberts on taking advice from Meryl Streep’s daughter Grace Gummer about raising kids as a celebrity: “Grace comes up and goes, ‘Gosh, it’s so sweet seeing all your kids on the set. It reminds me of when I was little, and I would go see my mom at work.’ I asked, ‘Were you happy?’ Suddenly, I thought, here is a source of information. I said, ‘How old were you when you realized your mom was Meryl Streep?’ She said, ‘I think I was probably nine when I put that all together.’ I said, ‘Were you cool with it?’ She said, ‘Yeah, it was fine. There was no trauma.’ So that was hopeful.”

Dr. Oz's Snack Attack: Eat More and Weigh Less

Do you wish you could eat more without gaining weight? Try these delicious snacks and watch the pounds melt away.

Recent studies prove that snacking on the right foods at the right time can turn your body into a fat-burning machine. Get your metabolism going with a pre-dinner snack, 1-2 hours before your main meal. Doing so will help you stop eating once you're full, which is sometimes hard to do. The key to snacking is to keep the snack light so you won't overdo it, but to make it hearty enough that it will satiate you. Also, aim for a snack that's 6 grams of fiber, 10 grams of protein, and ends up being under 200 calories. Get started with the following four recipes.

Antipasto Power Plate
This easy-to-assemble snack packs a protein punch with the proscuitto, and there's plenty of fiber in the chickpeas and zucchini.

Ingredients
1 thin slice prosciutto
One 2% mozzarella string cheese
2 olives
1 cup zucchini
1/4 cup chickpeas

Directions
Wrap the prosciutto around the string cheese. Enjoy with the olives and veggies on the side.

Crush Your Cravings With 5 Appetite-Suppressing Foods

By Julie Daniluk, RNC
Nutritionist and Host of Healthy Gourmet on the OWN network

Julie's soon to be published first book, Meals That Heal Inflammation (Random House), advises on allergy-free foods that both taste great and assist the body in the healing process.

Do you struggle with cravings? They aren’t your fault! It turns out that our hormones cause our cravings. Hormones are the messengers that influence how we feel, what we want, and how fast our body stores fat.

When your stomach is empty, it produces a hormone called ghrelin that causes hunger. Think of ghrelin like the gremlin that is sabotaging your weight loss efforts. If you let yourself go hungry, your cravings will be too intense to resist!

The trick is to stay full. The way to get rid of the “ghrelin gremlin” is to eat wholesome foods that suppress your appetite. No gimmicks, no crash diets, just consistent tools to help you stay full and satisfied. By reducing your calorie intake by 500 calories a day, you could lose 50 pounds in a year. This can be as easy as cutting back on 3 ounces of potato chips or one cheeseburger a day.

An Apple a Day Keeps the Doctor Away

Avoid extra visits to your doctor due to unbalanced blood sugar. Soluble fiber in apples, called pectin, reduces the amount of sugar and calories that’s absorbed into the bloodstream after a meal. That’s good news for folks who want to prevent type 2 diabetes, but it also makes apples one of the best snacks for dieters. Apple pectin prevents spikes in blood sugar that lead to increased fat storage. It will help you avoid the blood sugar “crash” that leaves you craving more food.

How long it will keep me satiated?

Apple pectin can keep you full for 1-2 hours.

When should I eat it?

Eat an apple before or after a meal to help keep you full faster and longer, or between meals to help keep blood sugar balanced. Consider adding apple pectin powder to yogurt, porridge/oatmeal or shakes.

5 Reasons to Run a 5K

Can't get motivated about fitness? Signing up for a 5K race is the perfect way for you to stay accountable, get healthy and burn fat.

You say you want to get fit, but then you hit the snooze button instead of the gym. You want to get in shape, but you spend more time in your pajamas than your running shoes. You want to tone up, but your only strength training involves carrying groceries from your car. Sound familiar?

It is extremely common to experience a disconnect between your workout goals and your fitness realities; a crucial step in reconciling these is to find motivation. And there is perhaps no better motivation than signing up for a race. Don't shy away before you've laced up your shoes for this first time. A 5K is the perfect race for beginners - and here are 5 reasons why.

Wonderful Workout
Running can burn up to 700 calories per hour. You'll raise your heart rate, lower blood pressure, and relieve stress - all while toning and shaping your body. Running targets everyone's favorite problem areas; it tightens your glutes and flattens your abs. Plus you'll be meeting 2 of Dr. Oz's fitness rules: breaking a sweat 3 times a week and checking off more than half of your daily 10,000 steps!

Everyman's Race
K stands for "Kilometer," and a 5K race is around 3.1 miles. Even if the last time you ran a few laps was in high school gym class, this race is a realistic goal. By committing to train only 3 days a week, starting 7 weeks before the race, you can get in shape to complete your 5K. .

The reason many people get intimidated by running is that they do not begin their training properly. They make the mistake of trying to run as long as they can right away instead of gradually building up their endurance. This methodology can exhaust your muscles and leave you feeling extremely frustrated( and convinced that runners are masochists in the purest sense.)

Instead of shocking your body, ease into getting in shape. Start off slow and give your body time to warm up. Alternate walking and running for equal intervals of distance. Gradually decrease your walking time each week, and eventually you will be able to run up to 30 minutes consecutively.

Get Going and Stay Going
Once you determine an appropriate schedule to get you in shape, you'll find the motivation you need to exercise. A schedule will keep you motivated and focused when you could otherwise make excuses. Print out your schedule or Dr. Oz's Health Pledge and post it at work or on your refrigerator. These reminders will keep you accountable to your commitment to health and wellness.

The Best Time to Avoid a Heart Attack

It may sound funny, but it’s true. There’s one time of day when you can dramatically decrease your chances of dying from a heart attack. Here are the 6 things you need to know.

It’s probably no surprise in this overscheduled world of ours, that our bodies stick to a pretty rigid rhythm themselves. And understanding our internal clocks gives us the power to do everything we can to stay healthy, and, in some cases, stay alive. Here’s what you need to know to stop the #1 killer of women—heart disease—from stopping you.

Here are 3 reasons heart attacks are 3 times more likely to strike in the morning than the evening:

  1. Blood pressure is highest in the morning because it rises quickly to get you ready for the day. In fact, your heart needs 50% more blood to go from being asleep to being awake, and as that blood pulses through your blood vessels, the increased pressure can tear the vessel lining.
  2. Blood vessels are thicker in the morning. Just as our muscles and joints feel stiffer when we get up, our blood vessels are thicker and more rigid. It’s harder for them to bend and flex, which makes them more likely to build up plaque; combine that with high blood pressure, and it’s a recipe for artery rupture.
  3. Blood is thicker in the morning. The platelets in our blood, which help it clot, are stickier in the morning and more likely to stick to blood vessel walls, plus the system that combats blood clots is not as active in the am. And when stickier blood hits the scars and tears caused by high blood pressure and stiff arteries, clots form, and the stage for a heart attack is set.

Changing and Bathing a Baby

Parents are often daunted by the idea of changing and bathing a baby, but if you are patient and allow yourself some trial and error, you should have problems.

Baby Nappies

There has never been such a wide range of nappy (diaper) options, so every parent can find something to suit:
. Disposables. Choose eco-friendly disposable rather than ordinary, standard types. Standard ones contain chemicals, especially in the absorbent gels used, that it is throught could be harmful to a baby. Disposal of these nappies causes problems for the environment.
. Fabric nappies. These reusable nappies are sold in a vast range of forms, from the classic terry toweling square to ready-shaped fabric nappies that close with integral fasteners (such as poppers) or with separate plastic fasteners (the modern equivalent of nappy pins). Many fabric nappies can be adjusted to fit a growing baby and you can use laundering services to clean them - such services tand to favor 'pre-folded' fabric nappies, now widely available.
. Liners. These fit right inside a fabric nappy to catch waste. Disposable liners that you simply flush away are very popular, and biodegradable types are available. You can also buy washable fabric ones, which can be reused.
. Wraps and pants. These are reusable and fit over the top of nappies. The most natural option is a cotton wrap, with an inner waterproof layer, that closes with poppers or Velcro-type fastenings.
. All-in-ones. These are typically a cotton inner nappy permanently attached to a waterproof cover and fastened with poppers. The whole thing can be machine- washed and tremble-dried. These take some time to dry and seem costly as an initial outlay.

Changing and Cleaning a Baby

Always check for redness or rashes. Nappy rash is common but quickly treated - try soothing calendula cream and homeopathic calendula powder. Never use talc on your baby (or on yourself), even unperfumed kinds, as it has been linked with possible harmful effects. Wash the baby often and change the nappy as often as necessary. Allow the baby to be without a nappy for short intervals each day, so that air can circulate - warm, damp areas can lead to rashes.
To clean your baby before putting on a new nappy, use cotton wool with lots of warm water of just a gentle, nonperfumed lotion (especially if he or she has a rash). Avoid soaps if possible, especially perfumed and colored ones, and try to steer clear of disposable wipes, which strip skin of natural oils. Clean girls from font to back, to avoid spreading germs into the vagina or urethra. Do not separate the labia or clean inside. When cleaning a boy's penis and testicles, do not pull back the foreskin. Dry by patting gently, right into the folds, with a soft towel.

Dangerous Health Secrets Men Keep

What your man isn't telling you, why it matters, and how to get him to open up

You don't need a TV show to tell you that most men hate going to the doctor. It's like asking for directions - it just doesn't seem in their DNA. But what you may not know is how much about their health men are keeping from you.

Whether they're worried it will make them seem less manly, scared what the doctor will say, or just think it's their job to be strong and silent, American men are damaging their families and their health by hiding important medical information. Here are their 3 biggest secrets and how you can help them break the silence.

 The Big One
Nobody wants to talk about it, but almost every man experiences it at some point in their life - the inability to get or maintain an erection. In fact, new research shows that Erectile Dysfunction affects more than half of men over the age of 60, and nearly 20% of men over the age of 20. So why aren't they talking about it?

Experts say that most men blame themselves, thinking that emotions are at the root of the problem. But most cases of ED result from medical problems such as high blood pressure, diabetes, obesity and smoking, which is one of the reasons (beyond keeping your sex life healthy) that it's important to address it.

The solution: There are several effective treatments for ED from well-known medications such as Viagra and Cialis (which increase blood flow to the penis) to medication injected in the base of the penis and, even, penile implants. Sometimes addressing underlying issues such as weight or alcohol consumption can help as well. Learn more about the Beer Gut Diet for a guy-friendly weight-loss plan.

A Pressing Issue
It's a normal part of getting older: as men age, their prostate (the walnut-shaped gland under the bladder that helps produce semen) begins to thicken, compressing the urethra and making it difficult for urine to pass through. So men may go to the bathroom constantly, but take a long time to actually urinate or finish - and feel like they have to go again right away.

The solution: Though there is no cure for an enlarged prostate, treatment options include using targeted microwaves or a heat-releasing needle to shrink the prostate, and surgery. For milder cases, lifestyle changes such as spreading your fluid intake throughout the day and relaxing during urination can help.

Dr. Jen Ashton’s RX: Foods That Fight Stress and Secrets for Stressed-Out Skin

Dr. Jen Ashton, one of the country’s top gynecologists and author of Your Body Beautiful, shares her secrets for avoiding stress-related weight gain, as well as natural ways to deal with stressed-out skin.
Added to Articles on Mon 01/16/2012
Today, who doesn’t have tons of stress in their life? Too much stress can raise blood pressure, cause stomach problems, disrupt sleep patterns and more. As if that’s not bad enough, stress can induce weight gain. There are a couple reasons behind this phenomenon.

First, when you’re frazzled, it’s easy to turn to food as a source of comfort and make poor eating choices. Second, stress stimulates the release of the flight-or-fight hormone, cortisol, which can make your waistline expand.

To help you avoid packing on the pounds when you’re stressed out, author and gynecologist Dr. Jen Ashton shares her foolproof secret weapons to help you cut out poor eating habits, fight stress, and lose weight. The plan requires you to be somewhat strict Monday through Friday, but the weekends offer a little wiggle room from the dietary restrictions.

Foods That Fight Stress

1: Eliminate Bad Carbs
Start by eliminating all bad carbs from your diet. That includes anything that contains simple sugars such as foods made with white flour, processed snacks, white potatoes, etc. Monday through Friday try to eliminate anything in grain form, even the good whole-grain carbs, and stick to lean proteins, fruits and vegetables instead.

Dr. Ashton’s Secret Weapon: Wheat berries
On the weekends, make wheat berries – whole-wheat kernels – your go-to carbs. These healthy whole grains, available in hard and soft forms – are versatile, high-in-protein, complex carbohydrates that will keep you full and help you maintain a high energy level throughout the day. Add them to salads, cereal or mix with dry fruit for a healthy snack.
